This very happy occasion took place in St Anne’s Cathedral in Leeds on Saturday 15 July 2017 at 11 am. He was ordained priest by the Rt Revd Marcus Stock, Bishop of Leeds, accompanied by Archbishop Arthur Roche, and the Rt Revd John Wilson Auxiliary Bishop in the Westminster diocese. Many of the diocesan priests were also present to add to the splendour of the occasion, together with members of his family and his many friends from around the world. Light refreshments were offered in the nearby Wheeler Hall and all were invited.
The next day he celebrated his first Mass in St Austin’s Church. Many of his fellow seminarians were present and the many priests who helped him along the six year journey to the ordained priesthood. Canon T Swinglehurst, a former parish priest in St Austin’s, gave the homily and recalled many years ago seeing Elliott attend the 6 pm Sunday Mass along with his father, brother and sister, and then joyfully by his mother. A parishioner recalled meeting Elliott and a friend of his one Good Friday afternoon in St Austin’s. She remembered asking Elliott what he wanted to do when he left school and this young boy said straight away, “I want to be a Catholic Priest.”! And now all these years later his long held vocation to the sacred priesthood has become a wonderful reality. The packed church felt privileged to be part of this marvellous occasion which was enhanced by uplifting music from St Austin’s Choir. Monsignor David Smith, our present Parish Priest, recalled interviewing Elliott, whilst he was still at school, as he took his first positive steps to the ordained priesthood. He then made a presentation to him on behalf of the parish. Fr Wright asked for our prayers and he offered his for us. A reception followed in the Parish Rooms where Fr Wright had the opportunity to meet many of those parishioners who had supported him throughout his priestly journey. We will do as asked and keep praying for Fr Wright and all our priests who give such selfless service to the people of God.
